AC Repair Cost: What Common Fixes Run in 2026

A typical air conditioner repair costs $150 to $650, with a national average around $350, according to Fixr’s 2026 AC repair data. Angi reports the same $350 average for HVAC repairs overall, but with a much wider spread: $100 on the low end and up to $3,000 on the high end. The gap between those two ends is almost entirely about which part failed.

Small electrical parts like capacitors are cheap. Compressors and evaporator coils are the repairs that make you price a new system. This guide lists what each common fix costs, what the fees look like before the tech touches anything, and how to decide when a repair stops making sense.

AC Repair Cost by Part

Fixr publishes a per-repair table. These are its 2026 ranges, with the average where Fixr gives one:

RepairCost rangeAverage
Condensate drain line clearing$75 - $250n/a
Capacitor replacement$100 - $400$175
Thermostat$100 - $500n/a
Contactor or electrical repair$150 - $400n/a
Condenser fan motor$200 - $700$500
Refrigerant leak repair and recharge$200 - $1,600$800
Blower motor$450 - $2,000n/a
Evaporator coil$600 - $2,000n/a
Compressor$800 - $2,800$1,550

Angi’s figures are in the same neighborhood. It lists circuit boards at $200 to $600, fan motors at $100 to $700, and refrigerant recharge at $200 to $500. Where the sources disagree, the difference usually comes from refrigerant type and how much of the job is labor. Treat any single quote as a data point, not a verdict.

Fees You Pay Before the Repair

The repair price is not the whole bill. Fixr lists technician labor at $60 to $150 per hour, a diagnostic fee of $75 to $250, and emergency surcharges of $50 to $200 or more. Angi puts an initial service call at $100 to $250, after which the tech charges either a flat rate for the specific fix or $100 to $250 per hour plus parts.

Those fees stack. A $175 capacitor job with a $75 to $250 diagnostic fee comes to roughly $250 to $425 (our arithmetic, using Fixr’s average and range). If it happens on a July weekend and carries a surcharge, add up to $200 or more on top.

Why Refrigerant Fixes Cost More Than They Look

An AC is a sealed loop. If the refrigerant is low, there is a leak, and adding more without fixing the leak is a short-term patch. The EPA’s consumer guidance says to “locate and repair leaks instead of ‘topping off’ leaking systems.” That is why Fixr’s refrigerant range runs from $200 to $1,600: the low end is a simple recharge, the high end includes finding and repairing the leak.

Older systems add a wrinkle. Units built before roughly 2010 may use R-22. The EPA states that as of January 1, 2020, no new R-22 is made or imported into the United States. It also says homeowners are not required to replace existing equipment, and that reclaimed R-22 remains available for service. Contractor pricing guides we reviewed put installed R-22 anywhere from about $80 to $250 per pound, which is a wide, non-governmental range, so ask your tech for a per-pound price in writing before authorizing a recharge.

Repair or Replace: Three Rules That Actually Get Used

Age. ENERGY STAR flags central AC older than 10 years as a replacement candidate, particularly when it needs frequent repairs and energy bills are rising. Fixr notes most AC units are designed to last 10 to 15 years.

The 50% rule. Fixr’s guideline: if a repair costs more than half the price of a new system, especially on an older unit, replace it. Our central AC replacement guide puts installed replacement at $5,500 to $12,000, so half is $2,750 to $6,000 (our arithmetic).

The $5,000 rule. Multiply the unit’s age by the repair quote. If the result passes $5,000, replacement deserves a serious look. This is a contractor rule of thumb, not a standard, but it is useful because it penalizes both a pricey repair and an old unit. Our HVAC repair or replace calculator runs both rules on your numbers.

Three Illustrative Cases

These are worked examples built from the Fixr averages above, not real customer quotes.

CaseRepair (Fixr avg)AgeAge x costShare of $5,500-$12,000 replacementVerdict
Failed capacitor$1757 yrs$1,2251% to 3%Repair
Refrigerant leak$80013 yrs$10,4007% to 15%Get a replacement quote
Compressor, out of warranty$1,5509 yrs$13,95013% to 28%Judgment call

The compressor row is where the rules disagree. It passes the 50% test easily, but fails the age-times-cost test. Our read: if the system is otherwise sound and the climate is mild, repair and monitor. If the coil is also original, the house is hot most of the year, or the unit has been repaired before, put that money toward a new matched system instead. Check the manufacturer’s parts warranty first, because a covered compressor changes the math completely.

How to Pay Less

  • Ask for the diagnosis in writing. Request the failed part, the part price, and the labor hours separately. A single line reading “AC repair” is the kind of quote our contractor quote red flags guide warns about.
  • Get a second opinion on anything over $1,000. Compressor and coil quotes are where a wrong diagnosis is most expensive.
  • Avoid emergency timing when you can. Fixr’s surcharge of $50 to $200 or more is avoidable if the unit limps through to a weekday.
  • Do the free checks first. Check the thermostat batteries, the breaker, the air filter, and the condensate drain before calling. A clogged drain line can trip a safety switch and shut the system down.
  • Service it yearly. A tune-up catches weak capacitors and dirty coils before they fail on a hot day. See annual HVAC maintenance cost for what a visit should include.

When the Furnace Is Also Old

If the AC is 12 years or older and the furnace is similar, the repair decision should account for both. Replacing the pair at once avoids paying two sets of labor, which we cover in HVAC system replacement cost. If the furnace is the one acting up, see furnace repair cost. And if you are already facing a big replacement bill, our heat pump payback calculator shows whether one heat pump can cover heating and cooling together, as discussed in heat pump installation cost.

Bottom Line

Expect $150 to $650 for most AC repairs, with parts like capacitors and contactors on the cheap end and compressors and coils near $2,000 or more. Run the age-times-cost number before you approve anything above $1,000, ask for refrigerant leaks to be repaired rather than topped off, and keep the parts warranty paperwork handy.

FAQ

How much does an AC service call cost?

Fixr lists diagnostic fees of $75 to $250, and Angi puts an initial HVAC service call at $100 to $250. Many companies credit that fee toward the repair if you approve the work, so ask before booking.

Is it worth repairing a 15-year-old air conditioner?

Usually only for a small fix. Fixr says most units are built to last 10 to 15 years, and ENERGY STAR suggests considering replacement past 10. A $175 capacitor on a 15-year-old unit is reasonable. A $1,550 compressor on the same unit is not, because the age-times-cost number is $23,250 (our arithmetic) and you would be funding a repair on a system near the end of its life.

Why is my AC blowing warm air?

Common causes are a failed capacitor or contactor, a dirty coil, low refrigerant from a leak, or a failed condenser fan. The first two are among the cheapest repairs in the table above. Low refrigerant means a leak, so ask whether the quote includes finding it.

Does homeowners insurance cover AC repair?

Standard policies generally cover sudden damage from a covered event, not wear and tear or age-related failure. A home warranty or the manufacturer’s parts warranty is more likely to help with a failed component. Read the contract, because many plans exclude pre-existing conditions and have service fees.
