About Cost of Owning
Cost of Owning explains what homes, energy bills, cars and technology cost to buy, run and maintain. Our guides and free calculators help you answer: what should this actually cost?
Contractor quotes for the same job can differ by thousands of dollars, and most "cost guides" online are lead-generation funnels that ask for your phone number before they tell you anything. We think you should be able to get a realistic range first — anonymously, for free.
What we build
- Calculators that adjust to your home's size, climate and condition.
- Guides that explain what drives prices and how to compare quotes.
Our principles
- Show the math. Every calculator explains its assumptions. See how we estimate costs.
- Ranges over false precision. Real prices vary; we tell you how much.
- No selling your data. We don't collect leads or pass your details to contractors.
How we're funded
We have applied to Google AdSense, and advertising may support the site if approved. Ad code does not imply approval or endorsement. Advertisers do not determine our model inputs or results. We do not sell contractor leads.
Sources and corrections
Guides are published by Cost of Owning. We distinguish published prices and manufacturer specifications from our own calculations, and label assumptions in worked examples. A published specification is not a claim that we tested the product. Guides show their publication date and a separate update date when revised.
AI tools assist with research, writing, code and graphics. We do not claim professional review or firsthand testing unless a page identifies that work and its evidence. See our editorial policy and corrections.
Guide photographs are licensed stock images, primarily from Pexels. Our original charts show cited data or explicitly labeled scenarios; photographs do not document tests or jobs we performed.
If you spot an error, send the page URL, the figure in question and a supporting source through our contact form. We review corrections and update the guide when the evidence warrants a change.
