Car Repair Costs 2026: Up 5.2% in a Year

Car maintenance and repair prices rose 5.2% over the 12 months ending August 2026, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. That is faster than the 3.4% rise in the overall Consumer Price Index over the same period, and far faster than new vehicles (up 0.6%) or tires (up 0.4%). Used-car prices fell 2.3% and car insurance fell 5.1%, so repairs are one of the few ownership costs still climbing quickly. A typical annual maintenance budget is about $900, per ConsumerAffairs data as cited by The General, but one brake job can use up a big share of it.

What the Government Data Shows

The BLS August 2026 CPI tables give the cleanest picture of how car-related prices are moving. These are unadjusted 12-month changes.

Category12-month change, August 2026
Motor vehicle maintenance and repairup 5.2%
Motor vehicle parts and equipmentup 0.9%
Tiresup 0.4%
New vehiclesup 0.6%
Used cars and trucksdown 2.3%
Motor vehicle insurancedown 5.1%
Gasolineup 27.4%
All itemsup 3.4%

The gap between repair (up 5.2%) and parts (up 0.9%) is telling. Our reading, not a BLS statement: if parts prices barely moved while repair prices rose five times as fast, the difference likely sits in labor and shop pricing. Published labor rates vary widely. The General cites an AutoLeap 2024 figure of $75 to $130 an hour for mechanics across the 50 states, a range wide enough that where you live can matter as much as what you drive.

What Common Services Cost

The General’s 2026 maintenance guide reproduces ConsumerAffairs figures for routine work. We could not open the ConsumerAffairs page directly (it blocked our request), so treat these as figures as reported by The General.

ServiceTypical cost
Oil changeabout $164 per visit
Tire serviceabout $134 per visit
Brake padsabout $342 per wheel
Brake rotorsabout $613 per wheel
Alignmentabout $233 per visit
Basic inspectionabout $253 per visit
Battery replacementabout $414 per visit
Cabin air filterabout $95 per visit
Engine air filterabout $83 per visit
Wiper bladesabout $93 per visit

Our arithmetic: pads plus rotors on one wheel come to about $955, so doing both on one axle would run about $1,910 at those rates. That one job is roughly twice the $900 average yearly budget.

The same source lists major-repair ranges from J.D. Power:

Major repairRange
Engine replacement$2,000-$10,000
Transmission replacement$2,500-$5,000
Catalytic converter replacement$1,000-$2,500
Major brake system repairs$800-$1,500+
Head gasket replacementup to $3,000

Do Tariffs Raise Repair Bills?

Partly, and mostly on collision work. Autobody News, a trade publication, reports the following from industry sources:

  • CCC Intelligent Solutions’ Q4 2025 Crash Course report found collision parts prices rose more than 6% in both Q2 and Q3 of 2025.
  • PartsTrader estimates existing tariffs add roughly $100 to the parts line of an average repair order.
  • PartsTrader also says 44% of OEM collision parts sold in the US are made overseas.
  • An April 2025 IMR survey found 38.6% of shops had felt a direct tariff impact.
  • S&P Global estimates semiconductor tariffs add $200 to $219 per vehicle, and Autobody News reports each North American vehicle carries about $2,256 of electronic control units.

Autobody News also notes that Section 232 tariffs cover engines, transmissions, powertrain parts and electrical components, while sheet metal such as hoods, fenders and bumpers was largely exempt at the time of writing. These are trade figures for collision repair, not for oil changes or brakes. The CPI parts index rising only 0.9% shows the effect is not hitting all parts equally.

Technology adds cost too. Autobody News reports that ADAS calibrations appeared on 35.6% of direct repair program estimates in Q3 2025, up from 26.9% a year earlier. A cracked windshield or bumper with sensors now often needs more than a part swap.

What This Means for Your Budget

Our assumption: if your shop’s prices follow the 5.2% national trend, a $900 maintenance budget becomes about $947 next year (our arithmetic, $900 times 1.052). That is a modest increase. The real risk is a large unplanned repair, which is why many people set aside money monthly instead of budgeting a flat amount.

Repairs also interact with other costs. A pricey repair on an older car raises the question of whether replacing it makes sense; see our car cost of ownership guide and the car cost of ownership calculator to compare keeping versus replacing. If a new loan is the alternative, check the average car payment guide. Insurance moved the other way this year, so see car insurance cost 2026 before assuming all costs are climbing. Fuel is another swing factor; our hybrid break-even guide covers when a different powertrain pays off.

How to Spend Less

  1. Get two quotes on any job over a few hundred dollars. Labor rates vary, and the same part can be priced very differently.
  2. Ask for the estimate itemized. Separate parts, labor hours and shop fees so you can see what moved.
  3. Follow the owner’s manual, not the shop’s upsell menu. Intervals for oil, filters and brake fluid are listed by the maker.
  4. Do the easy jobs yourself. Engine air filters, cabin filters and wipers cost $83 to $95 per visit at the rates above, but the parts are cheap and the swaps take minutes on many cars.
  5. Fix small problems early. A worn brake pad costs far less than pads plus rotors, using the per-wheel figures above.
  6. Set aside money monthly. Our assumption: a $75 a month repair fund equals $900 a year and cushions the first surprise.
  7. Ask about aftermarket or remanufactured parts. Policies vary by shop and warranty, so confirm coverage before agreeing.

FAQ

How much have car repair prices risen in 2026?

The BLS reported that motor vehicle maintenance and repair prices rose 5.2% over the 12 months ending August 2026, versus 3.4% for all items.

How much does car maintenance cost per year?

The General cites ConsumerAffairs as putting the average expected annual maintenance cost at about $900 (October 2025 figure). Your cost depends on the car’s age, brand and where you live.

How much does an oil change cost in 2026?

The General reports ConsumerAffairs figures of about $164 per oil change visit. Prices vary by oil type, vehicle and shop.

Are tariffs making car repairs more expensive?

Trade sources report higher collision parts prices (CCC: more than 6% in Q2 and Q3 2025) and about $100 added to an average repair order (PartsTrader). The BLS parts index rose only 0.9% over the 12 months to August 2026, so the effect is uneven.

Is it cheaper to repair or replace an old car?

It depends on the repair cost, the car’s value and what a replacement payment would be. Compare the repair quote to several months of a new payment and run both in our cost calculator.
