Full-coverage car insurance averages $2,922 a year, or $243 a month, and minimum coverage averages $1,580 a year, or $132 a month, based on Experian’s August 2026 data from policies sold through its insurance marketplace. Across both coverage levels the blended average is $2,262 a year. At the same time, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported on September 11 that its motor vehicle insurance price index fell 5.1% over the 12 months ending August 2026, so premiums are cooling after several years of sharp increases. Your own rate still depends heavily on your state, age and driving record.

The National Averages
Insurance sites publish different averages because they use different quote samples, vehicles and driver profiles. Experian is the one source we opened in full for this guide.
| Measure | Annual | Monthly |
|---|---|---|
| Full coverage (Experian, Aug. 2026) | $2,922 | $243 |
| Minimum coverage (Experian, Aug. 2026) | $1,580 | $132 |
| Blended average (Experian, Aug. 2026) | $2,262 | $188 |
Other sites show lower full-coverage averages. As reported in search listings (we could not open these pages), Insurify’s September 2026 figure is about $187 a month and Compare.com’s is about $184 a month, and Insure.com and InsuredBetter list roughly $2,500 to $2,550 a year. The range is a sign that quote samples differ, not that one is wrong. Treat any national average as a rough anchor and get your own quotes.
The gap between coverage levels is large. Choosing full coverage over state-minimum liability costs about $1,342 more a year on Experian’s numbers (our arithmetic), because it adds collision and comprehensive protection for your own car. That extra pays off only if the car’s value justifies it, which we cover below.
Are Premiums Rising or Falling?
The BLS August 2026 Consumer Price Index release gives the best government read on the trend. The motor vehicle insurance index declined 0.8% in August after falling 0.3% in July, and it was down 5.1% from a year earlier. Over the same 12 months, overall consumer prices rose 3.4%, gasoline rose 27.4% and motor vehicle repair rose 5.2%.
Two cautions. The CPI tracks the change in what households pay for a constant coverage level, while Experian’s marketplace figure is a snapshot of quotes, so the two are not directly comparable. And a falling national index does not mean your renewal will drop; insurers price by state and by risk. Repair costs rising 5.2% are a cost pressure on insurers (our reading, not a BLS statement), so the pullback may not last.
What You Pay by State
Experian’s blended annual averages bracket the range:
| State | Blended annual average | Per month |
|---|---|---|
| Vermont (lowest) | $1,557 | $130 |
| Maryland (highest) | $4,181 | $348 |
Maryland costs about 2.7 times what Vermont does (our arithmetic), a $2,624 annual gap for the same national average driver. Where you garage the car is often the biggest single factor, and moving a household across a state line can change the premium more than switching companies. Our car cost of ownership guide shows how insurance fits into the full yearly cost.

What You Pay by Age
Experian’s blended averages by age and gender, August 2026:
| Age group | Female | Male |
|---|---|---|
| Under 20 | $3,224 | $3,414 |
| 20-29 | $2,730 | $2,816 |
| 30-39 | $2,405 | $2,302 |
| 40-49 | $2,263 | $2,172 |
| 50-59 | $2,031 | $1,989 |
| 60-69 | $1,807 | $1,800 |
| 70-79 | $1,792 | $1,869 |
| 80+ | $1,764 | $1,978 |
Teen and young-adult drivers pay the most. A male driver under 20 pays about $1,425 more per year than a male in his 50s (our arithmetic). Rates drift down through middle age and flatten after 60, with older male drivers ticking back up. Adding a teen to your policy is usually cheaper than a separate policy, though it still raises the household total significantly.
What Your Record Costs
Experian’s blended averages by driving record:
| Record | Annual average | Gap vs. clean |
|---|---|---|
| Clean | $2,112 | none |
| 1 moving violation | $2,475 | about $363 more (our arithmetic) |
| 3 or more incidents | $3,138 | about $1,026 more (our arithmetic) |
One ticket adds roughly 17% to the average premium, and three or more incidents add roughly 49% (our arithmetic). Violations typically stay on a record for several years, so avoiding even one has a multi-year payoff. We left out credit-based figures because we could not verify a current national number from a page we opened.
Does Your Car Change the Price?
Yes. Repair cost, theft rates and safety technology all feed premiums, and electric vehicles often cost more to insure than comparable gas cars; see our EV insurance cost guide for the breakdown. Vehicle choice also drives the loan side of ownership; for the payment and rate picture, read our average car payment guide. If you are choosing between powertrains, the EV vs gas cost comparison puts insurance next to fuel and depreciation.
How to Spend Less
- Compare at least three quotes every year. The spread between the cheapest and most expensive state in Experian’s data is $2,624, and spreads between companies in the same ZIP code can also be large. Quote the same coverage limits each time.
- Raise your deductible. Moving collision and comprehensive deductibles up lowers the premium. Ask each insurer to quote two or three deductible levels, and keep the higher one in an emergency fund.
- Drop full coverage on an old, low-value car. A common rule of thumb is to reconsider when the annual extra cost for collision and comprehensive coverage approaches 10% of the car’s value (our assumption, not an insurer rule). On Experian’s $1,342 gap, that suggests a car worth under about $13,400 is a candidate (our arithmetic).
- Ask about discounts. Bundling with home or renters insurance, paying in full, telematics programs, defensive-driving courses and good-student discounts vary by company and state.
- Keep your record clean. One violation costs about $363 a year on average per Experian, so a single avoided ticket is worth more than most discounts.
- Review coverage after life changes. Moving, changing commute length or adding a driver all alter risk; tell your insurer rather than waiting for renewal.
- Pick the car with insurance in mind. Get a quote before you buy, since the insurance difference between two similarly priced cars can be hundreds of dollars a year. Check resale too in our best resale value cars guide.
