Driving = miles ÷ mpg × gas price, plus tolls, hotels and wear. Flying = fares, bag fees (each way), parking and ground transport. Defaults are assumptions (Hopper average fare, Delta bag fee, AAA gas price); replace them with your real quotes. Time is not priced in: add your own value for the extra hours of driving.

How the comparison works

Driving costs are mostly shared: one tank of gas serves the whole car. Flying costs scale with headcount: every traveler needs a fare and usually a bag. That is why group size flips the answer more than anything else. A solo traveler on a long trip often flies cheaper; a family of four on a medium trip almost always drives cheaper.

What people forget

  • Bag fees are charged each way, so one bag is two charges.
  • Airport parking and rides can add a hundred dollars or more.
  • A rental car at the destination is a cost that driving avoids.
  • Wear and tear. Fuel is not the whole cost of a mile; set the wear field to see it.

Is it cheaper to drive or fly for Thanksgiving 2026?
For two or more travelers on a trip under about 500 miles each way, driving is usually cheaper because the fare is paid per person and gas is paid once per car. Hopper puts the average domestic Thanksgiving round trip at $402 per person (published September 25, 2026); use the calculator with your own quotes.
What are gas prices right now?
AAA's national average for regular was $4.43 a gallon on September 30, 2026, up from $3.15 a year earlier. EIA's September outlook averages $3.84 for all of 2026, so prices by Thanksgiving could differ from today's.
When is the cheapest day to fly for Thanksgiving?
Hopper found Monday, November 23 the cheapest departure at about $370 and Sunday, November 29 the most expensive at about $604. It advises booking before Halloween.
Do airlines charge for checked bags?
Most US airlines do on domestic economy fares. Delta lists $45 for the first bag and $55 for the second, each way, on its own baggage page, so a round trip is $90 for one bag. Check your airline, since fees vary and some fares include a bag.
Does the calculator include the value of my time?
No. Driving 800 miles takes most of a day each way; put your own price on that before deciding. The calculator compares out-of-pocket cost only.
